Eerie land of Chernobyl – photos of the disaster area 25 years later

On April 26, 1986, reactor four in the Chernobyl Nuclear Plant in Ukraine suffered a catastrophic power increase which lead to explosions in its core.  This dispersed large quantities of radioactive fuel and core materials into the atmosphere.  Unprotected workers near the accident received fatal doses of radiation within minutes.  Residents of nearby Prypait began to fall ill within hours   One thousand kilometers away, at the Forsmark Nuclear Power Plant in Sweden, radiation alarms began sounding.  At that time, the Soviets finally admitted that something had happened.  On April 27, the Soviets began evacuating residents in the area.  Telling residents that the evacuation would only last a few days and to only take critical items with them, most left their personal belongings behind.  Today the “zone of exclusion” is an eerie ghost town frozen in time.
