Please, reclassify Fox News as a “fictional reality-based TV show” – new report shows their climate change reporting is 93% wrong
// September 25th, 2012 // General Science News
According to a new report issued by UCS (Union of Concerned Scientists), despite their public commitment to sustainability issues, Fox News reporting of global warming is wrong 93% of the time. Fox News is owned by Robert Murdoch’s News Corporation. Yeah, the same dorks accused of scavenging news by hacking into people’s phones.
As UCS put it:
“UCS’s examination finds that the misleading citations include broad dismissals of human-caused climate change, disparaging comments about individual scientists, rejections of climate science as a body of knowledge, and cherry picking of data.”
To which we respond, “you mean they base some their news reports on actual data?”
UCS pointed out several instances where Fox News promoted a general distrust in science and scientific institutions, and placed acceptance of climate-change via discussions based on ideological, rather than a fact-based context. They went on to point out:
“It’s like they were writing and talking about some sort of bizarre world where climate change isn’t happening. It’s clear that we’re not having a fact-based dialogue about climate change.”
UCS also noted a leaked 2010 memo from Fox News Channel’s Washington editor in which he urged his staff to highlight contrarian views on the basic question of whether Earth is warming.
Anecdotal and academic reports had already suggested that there were high levels of misleading chatter on Fox News so UCS painstakingly combed through six months’ worth of Fox News primetime news programs and found that Fox News was consistently dismissive of the established scientific consensus that climate change is happening and human activities are the main driver. For example, on March 23, 2012, one Fox News personality referred to global warming as a “hoax and fraud” while a March 9 show, Robert Tracinski decried the “failure of the global warming theory itself”.
UCS pointed out:
“It is entirely appropriate to disagree with specific actions or policies aimed at addressing climate change… And while it is appropriate to question new science as it emerges, it is misleading to reject or sow doubt about established science — in this case, the overwhelming body of evidence that human-caused climate change is occurring.”
UCS stopped short of demanding Fox News redefine itself as a fictional reality TV show, they did ask that Fox News reexamine their reporting standards so we can have a “sober adult conversation” about the topic.
