Waterworld movie posterForbes is reporting that the Syfy channel is considering making a Waterworld sequel either as a made-for TV movie or as a stand-alone series. Syfy network president Dave Howe told Forbes the project has been something that is “talked about endlessly”.  He noted that every time the network reairs the movie, it does very well (Waterworld is a Universal movie, owned by NBC Universal who also owns Syfy).

Waterworld is a 1995 post-apocalyptic science fiction film directed by Kevin Reynolds and co-written by Peter Rader and David Twohy. It was based on Rader’s original 1986 screenplay and stars Kevin Costner, who also produced it with Charles Gordon and John Davis. The setting of the film is the distant future (2500 AD has been speculated). The polar ice caps have completely melted, and the sea level has risen many hundreds of meters, covering nearly all the land. The plot of the film centers on an otherwise nameless antihero, “The Mariner”, a drifter who sails the Earth in his trimaran.

At the time of filming, Waterworld was the most expensive movie every made.
