There’s a reason why Van Halen cover bands have always been few and far between – nobody can touch Eddie Van Halen’s guitar work. As we see in this video however, 14-year-old guitar prodigy “Tina S.” is no ordinary guitarist. After gaining minor notoriety a few years back with her guitar performance of Ferdinando Carulli’s “Andante, Tina S. is back to prove she’s the real thing, nailing one of the most difficult guitar solo’s of all time – Van Halen’s 1978 Eruption (ranked second on Guitar World’s list of the 50 best). And like a typical 14-year-old girl, Tina appears to look bored while doing it.
Guitarists across the ‘Net noted the level of expertise required to play Eruption.
“I know a grown-ass man that spent a decade heading a Van Halen cover band that can’t tap that well.”
“She’s got some serious chops. I’ve been playing guitar for 23 years, am a professional musician, and I can’t touch some of those runs.”
We agree and lest we say it, she possibly played the solo *even better* than Eddie Van Halen’s original rendition. How could that be? Here’s Eddie’s recollection of how the world famous solo came about.
I showed up at the studio early one day and started to warm up because I had a gig on the weekend and I wanted to practice my solo-guitar spot. Our producer, Ted Templeman, happened to walk by and he asked, ‘What’s that? Let’s put it on tape!” I played the bit twice for the record and they kept one. I didn’t even play it right –there’s a mistake at the top end of it. Whenever I hear it, I always think, “Man, I could’ve played it better.”
Not much else is known about Tina S. All we know thus far is that Tina was taught by Rock-Fusion guitarist Renaud Louis-Servais, who also shot and posted the video on YouTube, and that she is playing a Vigier Excalibur Custom guitar.
