Nvidia logoNvidia has formally introduced the Tegra 4 and specs pretty much match earlier leaks that we reported.  Developed under the codname “Wayne”, the Tegra 4 will have 72 Nvidia GeoForce GPU cores giving it six times the graphics processing power of the Tegra 3.  The main processor will be a new quad-core variant of ARM’s Cortex-A15 CPU, a chip that Nvidia claims “delivers 2.6x faster web browsing and breakthrough performance for apps.” 4G LTE will be provided by a new fifth-generation Nvidia Icera i500 chipset that is more energy efficient and 40% smaller than its predecessor.  Other energy efficiency improvements include a new second-generation battery saver core and PRISM 2 Display technology that reduces backlight power.  It should consume up to 45 percent less power than the Tegra 3 and provide up to 14 hours for HD video playback. The Tegra 4 design features the Computational Photography Architecture, which automatically delivers high dynamic range (HDR) photos and video by combining the processing power of the GPU, CPU and the camera’s image-signal processor.  The Tegra 4 can snap two photos almost simultaneously capture and combine them into a HDR image while the iPhone 5 takes about 2 seconds to capture an HDR image.

Nvidia noted:

“It basically is a one-shot HDR,” he said. “Whatever you can take with one exposure, you can now take in HDR.”
