In an odd but not totally unexpected twist to the story, a hacking group claiming to represent Anonymous has threatened Sony with the same type of bitch slap they got from [cough] North Korea’s GOP if the movie The Interview is not released as planned (read a complete breakdown of the Sony attack here).  This was followed by other messages from a poster claiming to represent Anonymous in which the group announced plans for a “first strike” in the name of “free speech” and debated how, and if, to continue.

Anonymous threatens attack against Sony if The Interview is not released

The first message read:

I Dear Mr. Michael Lynton (CEO of Sony Entertainment),

We shall first-off begin this message with an expression of sympathy as you have failed to release “The Interview” as you believe that hackers shall carry out a new operation to cause malicious damage within your organisation.

I would like to inform you that we all know the hacks didn’t come from North Korea (we think everybody knows about this already).

What we would like to say is that by not releasing “The Interview”, you are denying us the privilege of the Freedom Of Information Act (1966).

Unfortunately, due to your organisation panicking at first sight of trouble, we find this very cowardly of both yourself and your organisation (Sony Entertainment).

We know that Mr. Paulo Coelho has offered Sony Entertainment a sum of $100,000 for the rights of the movie; where he shall then be able to upload the movie onto BitTorrent.

Obviously, you shall not be responding to his generous offer – so please respond to ours with a public conference, we wish to offer you a deal…

Release “The Interview” as planned, or we shall carry out as many hacks as we are capable of to both Sony Entertainment, and yourself.

Obviously, this document was only created by a group of 25 – 30 Anons, but there are more of us on the internet than you can possibly imagine.

We are Anonymous,

We are Legion,

We do not forgive,

We do not forget,

Expect us.

The “Coelho offer” mentioned in the message refers to The Alchemist author Paulo Coelho’s offer to buy the rights to the movie from Sony and release it straight to BitTorrent for free.

Operation Sony in name of free speech

The first message was followed by second shortly after in which Anonymous announced that a “first strike” operation was being discussed.  Anonymous cautioned that any such attack could naturally be labelled a “terrorist attack” by the media and thus, careful consideration and caution should be exercised.

***FELLOW ANONS IT SADDENS US TO SAY THIS BUT WE ARE FACED WITH A BRUTAL FUCKED UP SITUATION***

#Sony

We are Anonymous
We are Legion
We do not forgive
We do not forget
Expect Action

We’re are faced with option A: we’re fucked or option B: we’re fucked, DAMNED if you do DAMNED if you don’t. Due to recent events there’s the very real possibility that hacker will = terrorist very soon unless some sort of action is taken. We are open to ideas anything that can be done, without violence, or physical harm. We need to show the world now more than ever that knowledge needs freedom and now that they’ve conveniently repackaged CISPA:

http://www.cispaisback.org/

This will be the very thing to destroy our freedom. So are we as a collective going to rise up, or just let the rug get ripped right out from underneath us? We don’t have much time to decide.

A metaphorical “First Strike” action is being discussed and anything pertaining to the Sony/North Korean issue can be discussed in #SONY

It’s time to put any petty differences aside and truly come together, is that not what we stand for? The right to privacy? The right to free speech? THIS IS A VERY REAL SITUATION, and further plans must be discussed, the last thing we want is to be labeled terrorists, the sheople will fall right in line with that one because they don’t know any better. It’s not their fault, but it has almost become our responsibility.

Anonymous asks – no action or first strike?

Later in the afternoon on the same day, yet another Anonymous message was issued:

***FELLOW ANONS IT SADDENS US TO SAY THIS BUT WE ARE FACED WITH A BRUTAL FUCKED UP SITUATION***

#Sony

We are Anonymous
We are Legion
We do not forgive
We do not forget
Expect POSSIBLE action

OBAMA’s SPEECH about SONY:

-In light of the fact that we are already being dragged into this by M.S.M., we must decide if no action at all will be the action or whether to take the “First Strike” option into effect. EITHER WAY THERE WILL BE NO VIOLENCE – NONE. You come into #Sony and discuss violence/threats/guns in anyway, you WILL be banned.

The CBS News article linked in the message concerns an interview with Sabu (aka Hector Monsegur) in which he stated North Korea did not have the network infrastructure to download the amount of data stolen in the Sony attack.  I would disagree strongly with that statement as compromised boxes located outside of Korea could have easily utilized file-sharing software for data storage (not that I’m totally convinced the blame aimed at North Korea is not a politically motivated attack that’s simply taking advantage of the situation).

Are we on the verge of the first major Cyber War?  What an interesting Ping Pong match this could turn out to be…
